SEO Mad Scientist Hey there fellow testers! If you saw last week’s SEO Vault then you know we currently have a ton of tests running, covering both local and organic. The thing with testing though is that if you only do a test once, and get the result, you really don’t have any basis to determine if your findings are definitive or not. In many of our previous tests, we have mentioned not getting consistent outputs. This is why retesting your tests multiple times is vital to determining the validity of your findings. We generally run each test multiple times before reporting the findings in the weekend update specifically for this reason. We are currently in the process of re-running some of the single variable and multivariable tests! This week we are going to review three tests, how they were set up, and what we were expecting to find. Over the next few weeks, we are going to cover our first test result and compare them to subsequent tests. More Onsite Organic Schema Tests We are still seeing a lot from reputable SEOs in the community who swear by the power of schema for ranking organic. If you followed our previous tests then you know our signal variable tests did not show any real organic indexing power, and our split tests showed mixed results where schema-based sites rarely showed #1 compared to our other tests. We decided to retest the split test on a bigger level to see if there was something we missed. Registering 2 almost exact d website, we launched 2 local sites with EMD brands, homepage, services pages, about page and the address in the footer. We use nothing but heading, images, and map embeds to try and limit any variables. One website has location markup on each page and service markup on the services pages, the second site is left with the basic front end optimization. Our other tests only included 1 page so this should give us a better idea of how schema strategy performs as a whole. 2. Schema linking tests In this test, we are doing our same split test from above but without any onsite schema markup. Instead, we are going to build a brand link to each site. On test one, we will have one backlink on a page with the business NAP and schema, and on the second test, we will have only the NAP and no schema. This should give us a good base point to determine how valuable testing off-page schema is and if it is a factor. We have speculated from observation that off-site schema markup may, in fact, be more powerful than onsite (another test we have but will go over on a later date) 3. Site Architecture This one comes back to a BIG question we hear a lot and is not a schema test. What we are testing is site architecture based on URL and how they compare to each other. Here are the test variations (let us know if you have any others): Brand.com/partial-keyword EMD.com/partial-keyword PMD.com/partial-keyword BrandGeo.com/partial-keyword EMDGeo.com/partial-keyword PMDGeo.com/partial-keyword Brand.com/exact-keyword EMD.com/exact-keyword PMD.com/exact-keyword BrandGeo.com/exact-keyword EMDGeo.com/exact-keyword PMDGeo.com/exact-keyword Brand.com/exact-keyword-geo EMD.com/exact-keyword-geo PMD.com/exact-keyword-geo BrandGeo.com/exact-keyword-geo EMDGeo.com/exact-keyword-geo PMDGeo.com/exact-keyword-geo We chose the same keyword for the homepage and inner pages, making the page as minimal as possible to remove any variables. The sites include a heading, image, anchor inner links, brand/location info, and info about page with the same about info. This is a larger test and we are still getting all of these ready to launch. We are hoping to have them launched next week and will be reporting on this one every week along with our other weekly test updates.Until then,Happy Testing..
