SEO MAD SCIENTISTS
We’re back with some shocking schema results from this past week! We have been testing like crazy in order to quantify the SEO value that comes from schema markup.
We were already a little surprised to find that schema markup was not indexable, meaning that if you have a term in your schema alone, Google will not return the page on your website. We know that major ranking signals, of course, do this. If you have a random keyword in your headings, content or metadata, google will pull that page as a result.
But does schema markup give you any competitive edge with the actual rankings?
Our most recent tests included multiple sites that we put up against each other to rank for a specific keyword that we made up (similar to our last tests). One of the test examples was the term “qpzlxzty”
When testing this term we did use some random “unique” content per page to try and detect any random ranking factors when comparing our results against similar tests, but we continued to find the same results doing the same test using the exact same content, as well as only using a video embed or image on the page to diferentiate them. With that said here is what we found…
After creating 10 pages for the term “qpzlxzty”, we waited for the pages to index and settle in the serps…
We then chose the 6th listing (qpzlxzty08.gobrand.website) to add FAQ schema for “What does qpzlxzty mean?” This was the title of the page as well. We should also mention that when we searched for “What does qpzlxzty mean?” after indexing, the qpzlxzty08 listing showed in the #7 position. Here is the schema we added to the page…
Once added and re-indexed the page immediately jumped to the number one spot which initially made us draw the concoction that the FAQ schema helped…
But then our question search made us think twice…
Our qpzlxzty08 listing only move 1 spot to position #7. Then a few days past and we saw this…
This listing dropped from the #1 spot for “qpzlxzty”, and still never budged from position 7 for “What does qpzlxzty mean?” This was the same findings we continued to find in our tests which makes us believe that the increase may have been due to a freshness score update and once it wore off it dropped. If anything we assumed we would see an increase for the search term “What does *** mean?” but we supersized at the result.
Now we can’t conclude definitively yet that it was just the page update vs the schema, Google is a complicated beast. So we developed a few more tests that were a little different, that would allow us to draw more conclusions about what is happening here.
This, of course, was also only testing FAQ schema, so obviously we had to do some testing on the local schema, and a few more as well.
Make sure to watch out for next week when we reveal our additional results giving us more insight into if the FAQ schema actually helped, and is local schema any diffrent when it comes to helping rankings…

When one of your SEO clients is pitched by another agency for a superrrrr low price, so low that it really is just a disservice to the client (lack of budget needed to move the needle) and the marketing industry (too often a race to the bottom) how do you guys handle that?
What are some questions you ask the client or things you say to the client?
