🔹 Does Google Use Schema to Index Websites?
(and yes we did this test from our phone, proving you can test anywhere, anytime…)
First thing we did is make up a term that didn’t produce any search results. In this case, it is “xqhtlukjertnu”. We do a quick Google search to make sure nothing is found…
Then we publish a page on our website with a FAQ schema, making sure to ONLY reference our made-up term (xqhtlukjertnu) in the schema code…
We then submit the page to Google Search Console for indexing and within 5 minutes we can see the page is indexed. You may notice I used another made-up term in the URL and H1 (mxjunxypmxh) which is essentially our control on this test, since we know Google uses these factors to index pages… (more on this in a bit)
Now when we search for our made-up term in Google, after the page is indexed, you will see that Google pulls no results. Google Search Console clearly crawled the page and reported the FAQ schema markup in our dashboard, but STILL, Google doesn’t return the page.
We use the H1 and URL as the control so when we search our second made up term now (mxjunxypmxh), you will see Google now returns the new page we just created…
What this tells us is that Google clearly does not look at the content within schema markup as an indexing factor, at least as it compares to other on-page factors. This makes perfect sense as schema markup is not visible to the front end user when accessing the website. This doesn’t mean schema cant be used as an authority factor, more testing is needed.
One thing is clear, Google doesn’t use schema markup to index pages, just like they don’t use keyword metadata. And when you think about it, why would they…
The SEO Mad Scientist is going back to the lab for more tests. Be sure to watch out next time for our newest updates…
