This Week in the Lab with SEO Mad Scientist
Does Google No Longer Index Meta Descriptions? Indexation Test Results!
Hey there SEO mad scientists, welcome back to another update. This week we’re looking at the final results from our indexation tests and we’ve actually uncovered some interesting finds.
Let’s start off by just jumping right into it and going over each indexation results as we have 11 different tests we ran.
We originally started off with some indexation tests using schema but quickly decided that we wanted to do a second round of schema indexation tests testing more than just one type of schema considering the increased impact is we’ve seen over the last year when implementing schema markup.
So with that said let’s take a look at the results:
1. HTML Code/CSS naming: oaiwjjdcnu
Not Indexed: This hasn’t changed from previous tests. To date we have not found general HTML code and CSS classes to be indexed.
2. Image Title: polslwwkxm
Not Indexed: The image title is the words that pop up when you hover your mouse over the image and was surprising when we discovered it didn’t index years ago. It appears that this content still does not index.
3. Image Names: kwsisyyuwjm
Not Indexed: This is similar to past findings as well. Image names would index the image under image search but would not pull the page the image was listed on when searching for the term inorganic search. It still looks like image names are not directly indexed. When we looked at the image index we didn’t see our image there so there’s a possibility the image itself hasn’t been indexed so maybe this will change once the image itself is indexed. From previous tests we believe it will not.
4. Any Length Images ALT Tags: ijkkiswjikii
Not Indexed: In the past we were able to put hundreds of words in an image all text and Google would index all of them, this appears to have changed. With this indexation test it looks like Google is not indexing long alt tags. The question we really wonder is Google still indexing all tags on images at all? Another simple indexation test will give us the answer. (Test for yourself or maybe we will have a bonus test next week)
5. Text the Same Color as the Background: ikswttgvaqvw
Indexed: Hidden text on the page as the same color as the background still indexes which is what we found with our previous indexation results.
6. Text Hidden with CSS Hidden: kofrijnksdf
Indexed: It appears you can still hide text with CSS as well and Google will index this content no problem even though it is not visible in any way from the front end of the website.
7. Text Hidden in Dropdowns: jdfijhsune
Indexed: Drop down menu content seems to still index just as well, so no worries about implementing drop-downs or tabs on your pages.
8. Meta Title: gyluwusnj
Indexed: The Meta title still indexed but surprisingly it did not show our test term in the title when we searched it. We are not sure the exact reason Google would not show the term especially because we have searched it but with Google’s new metadata and titles and how they’re being dynamically pulled, there could be a lot of things going on here.
9. Meta Description: ppqlwmje
Not Indexed: This was an interesting one and very unexpected. It appears that the meta description did not index, the question is was it just the flu or has meta description been depreciated similar to meta words have been a long time ago?
10. Social Meta Data Title: kdfourhhk
Not Indexed: We believe at one time social media indexed, but from our previous test we couldn’t find a record of it being true, it appears this hasn’t changed.
11. Social Meta Data Description: wheujgsvuk
Not Indexed: Just like the social media title, the social meta description does not seem to index as well.
That’s it for our indexation test results…
Were you as surprised as we were about the image alt text and The Meta description?
Those are the main results that have changed from previous findings and make us Wonder if these things should even be optimized for keywords anymore.
We speculated for a long time that Google would eventually completely depreciate all metadata for a web page as they would have a powerful enough AI to determine what information should be shown in search based on the search query and the content it’s pulling, it looks like we might be coming closer to that day.
Join us next week for more exciting test updates and until then as always…
Happy Testing!
