SEO Mad Scientist
The SEO Mad Scientist is back this week with some more test results and SEO findings!
If you’ve missed any of the previous weeks you can catch up in ourย weekly update archive
This week we are going to be wrapping up some final jump link tests.
Letโs start off with jump links.ย In one of our previous updates, we had mentioned a jump link test where we implemented jump links. After reindexing, we began to see an increase in site impressions!
At the time the data was limited and we couldn’t draw too many conclusions so we set out to get some answers ๐ง
The first thing we were able to find was that although jump linksย do showย in the SERPs, these links are not indexable on their own. They are always accompanied by their root URL. Meaning, if you put a jump link on a webpage with a keyword in it, the jump link URL itself isย notย adirect ranking signal. If your keyword is ONLY in the jump link URL, the page will not show in SERPs for the term.
With that being said, we know as a fact that these links are NOT a direct ranking signalย but.. are they indirect ranking signals is the question? In the previous test, we saw a correlation between impressions increasing when placing the jump links on our website. The fact is though, there are many things that could have influenced this.
The table of contents was pulled from the headings meaning – we just added all of our headings terms on the page increasing our term frequency. This could have caused the increased relevance. The jump link URL could have been an indirect signal as mentioned or possibly the links themselves could have been counted as internal links on the site.
We have 3 tests that are in progress to help us understand this better:
- Implement jump links on multiple pages without TOC or any links going to them internally tracking main page terms. This will show us if there are any indirect ranking signals from the โIDโ tag as well as if the jump link is indexed in SERPs without it being linked to.
- Implement jump links on multiple pages using the TOC as before and tracking the exact heading โtermโ rankings to determine if we see an increase or decrease. This will help us to get a more granular view on how the TOC links impact the rankings outside of impressions.
- Implement jump links on multiple pages without a TOC. We would only link to the jump links contextually from other pages on the website. This will tell us if ranking fluctuations are more likely due to the TOC itself or the actual jump links.
We are about 2 weeks into testing and so far test #1 and #2 have given us some awesome info. So we’ll be taking a look and see what we can determine!
As for Test #1, as we said the ID tag didn’t seem to have any effect on the rankings itself. This makes sense as adding the ability to link to a part of a page doesn’t actually provide any value to the reader. We used the keyword โqlrptsmedftโ and added an ID for it to the H2 on the page
Upon indexing we could not find any record in the SERPs for the term:
So we know these jump links are direct ranking signals. Now we wanted to test the linking in the glossary to these links.
We tracked all of our headings in search as well as our primary keywords. The first thing to make note of is that we really didn’t see any “positive” movement for our keywords and that many of our headings started to get split tested in SERPs.
It’s important to note that when Google indexes these jump links and displays them in SERPs, they are indexing the hyperlink itself, not the jump link ID or page title. Meaning that the link displayed in SERPs is the link to the anchor text you used in your TOC.
Based on this data, we are under the impression that TOC jump links themselves do NOT help with rankings! The links themselves can increase indexing and do possibly provide a more rich SERP result, but most likely the impact on rankings is due to the actual content being placed on the page within the TOC hyperlinks, not the jump link themselves.
These findings would explain why we see our heading start to be tested in SERPs as their on-page references just doubled and now appears at the very top of the page. This can also explain why we saw so many negative drops. For example “Social Media Marketing Chicago” – after adding the TOC, the term “social media” now appears another 11 times at the very top of the page.
Only by testing will we be able to determine the best way to implement jump links, but from our findings, it’s safe to say the TOC jump link anchor text itself seems to be the most important factor. This anchor is also what impacts the term showing as a jump link in SERPs
Our final jump link test hasn’t really shown any definitive results yet. Since jump links themselves don’t seem to directly impact rankings, the mad scientists best guess is that we will continue to have inconclusive data on internal linking with jump links. Just like all our tests, just because we get a result doesn’t mean we will be able to conclude anything either.
Next week we will let you know if there is any conclusive finding on test #3 as well as release some new data on internal content tests. The content on your website is influencing your rankings much more than you may know, and inner linking isn’t the only thing that impacts how Google uses your content to determine site relevance. We look forward to bringing you more tests as we uncover the secrets of the SERPs. See you next week!

Hey guys, I have a client that wants us to redesign and take over his website. Heโs ranking #1 for their primary keyword right now in a very competitive niche and solid rankings on additional keywords as well. Problem is, he canโt access his website and the company they previously worked with wonโt respond. Itโs a mature WordPress website and obviously we want to mess with the content as little as possible. What are my options here?
