SEO Mad Scientist
The SEO Mad Scientist is back for another update and he has a huge update to share!
We should call this the PBN Mad Scientist this week because we are about to dig into some PBN Links, types of PBNs, anchor text and of course, test results…
Back on April 10th, we said that we were going to run a PBN test on our test website that we had been reporting on at the time. Just to recap, this was a clean domain, no backlinks, we built a website with 25 pages of content. This was over 30,000 words of repurposed content from archive.org, which we went over in a previous update.
https://web20ranker.com/category/seo-news/
The website had been progressing from our previous reports, but with no previous backlinks at all, we wanted to test the effectiveness of standard PBN links (we will get more into the type of “PBN” links later)
Does Google really dislike PBNs, or is there more to it than just the fact it’s a “PBN”? We have seen many campaigns leverage PBN links with great success in the past but many have failed as well. The range of anchor text and PBN types vary drastically so for this test we used only one type of PBN and a very specific anchor text.
There are many types of PBNs but the most important thing you need to know about the two types is this – There are PBNs you own, and PBNs you don’t own. With that said, here is a quick DISCLAIMER:
Never send PBN links to a clients website, unless you OWN the PBN website…
What we mean is if you don’t control the link AND the website, don’t risk a client’s business by pointing these links directly to their website.
With that being said, here is generally how PBNs vary. If you won a PBN you control all the content on the website. Your backlinks will never leave the homepage, you can limit the number of outbound links, and most importantly you have the authority to decide what links are placed on the website. Another bonus is that you can keep the site niche-targeted as well.
These are not the type of PBN links we used. These are general PBNs with tons of content that is published frequently, and the links will eventually leave the homepage.
What we used are low-cost PBN budget links whose main purpose is to push a decent amount of link juice.
We built 50 budget links to our test site. 20 linked to the homepage and the remaining 30 links were sent to 19 different pages – 1 to 2 links per page.
Here is the exact budget links order placed with the URLs and anchor text used, replacing the brand name with “BRAND NAME”, the city & state with “CITY” & “STATE” and the website URL with “website.com“. View the full ULRs and anchors here.
All of these links were placed between April 19th and April 25th.
Looking in Search Console we can actually see all the links reported:
We are tracking 223 keywords in our rank tracker rankings from exact to long tail…
Impressions went from 958 to 1,230 with an average ranking going from position 39.6 to 34.5. This is just the past 4 weeks and as you can see we are making good progress, but not much traffic yet.
It’s pretty clear that these links helped the website gain rankings, but can we really rank this website with 100% PBN links?
If we were really looking to rank this site without any risk our plan of action would most likely be to run a press release, build some brand links, social media and a few niche edits. BUT we are here to test so that’s what we are going to do with another round of budget links ONLY!
First, let’s talk about what you can do with these links if you aren’t going to build them to your client’s website.
The SEO Mad Scientist doesn’t typically dive too deeply into agency building, but at the same time we don’t want to tell you A) these links gave us results but don’t link them to your client’s website, and B) we aren’t going to tell you what you can do with them! Use our findings at your own discretion to only help you become a better SEO! Were giving some insight on how you can properly use our findings in your agency without putting clients websites at risk. Just remember, our tests show good results but as an SEO you never rely on something like that to provide positive results forever.
The fact is PBNs are always a risk, but what makes them a risk is anchor text, which is why we did only used the brand, URL and brand partial match anchors with our links.
So here are some quick suggestions on how to leverage these links…
- Tiered link building to your clients properties. These links obviously push some good link juice and can be used as tier 2 links.
- Build these links to your private network sites, Geo Networks or Niche Networks. Many client campaigns leverage these and you may choose not to provide them as a deliverable to your client. Keeping these properties as your own network to leverage on future campaigns is one of the best ways to leverage a client budget to build your agency’s assets.
- Create 3 to 5 websites for your clients services/locations. Registering 5 domains should cost around $50 and using the archive content method we used, you can get the content for free. Using your clients logo on the site but registering general domains like “SERVICECITYsolutions.com”, you can brand the header of the site for your client and forward the calls to their phone number. Using low-cost services like budget links, you can rank these sites and provide a quality deliverable to your client CALLS. Provide them the call logs you forward to them every month. This creates a great client retention system, as well as gives you a lot of leverage to get a new client if you were ever to lose your current client.
Moving on with the test, we are going to send another round of PBN links to this test site and see how far we can push it. In the next few weeks, we will release the final results along with the big reveal of the test website itself. As you know, we are SEO scientists, so regardless if we get #1 rankings, or completely deindexed, you can trust you are going to know what happened and how. Because here at the SEO Mad Scientist, the only thing that matters is the facts.
Until then, see you next week and as always, Happy Testing!

I have a client that doesn’t want to put much content on their website because they think their customers don’t want to see it and it will deter them… but they want to rank I have tried explaining to them that content is an important part of moving rankings up and some information about their products/services wouldn’t hurt but they don’t seem convinced… is it a lost cause?

I have been using google xml sitemaps plugin on my site….and recently started using the seopress plugin that has it’s own xml sitemap generator. Will there be any issues (with search, google console, etc..) if I remove the google xml sitempap plugin and generate a new xml sitemap using the seopress xml sitemap feature?
