Sorry, we weren’t able to get you an update last week but as mentioned at the end of the SEO Vault on Thursday, our last test did not provide any results because it wouldn’t index which led to some further indexation tests. We wanted to see what types of content could be indexed, Even if it wasn’t visible on the screen. Last week’s test we had hidden the content with CSS but there are multiple ways you can hide content with CSS and the way that we chose did not seem to index, so of course, we wanted to know more. So what we did was create 8 different random letter terms and added those to a webpage using 8 different methods of concealing text on a page in order to see which methods Google can parse and that will still index. CSS display: none Same Color as Background With HTML Closed Drop Down Box CSS filter: opacity(0) Same Color as Background With CSS CSS transform: scale(0) CSS visability: hidden HTML <p hidden> The page was published last weekend and since then has been republished and submitted to Google multiple times but has yet to be indexed. We have actually found this to be the case with many of our test pages, especially orphaned pages. They can take 7 to 10+ days to index on less authoritative sites, even when submitting to Search Console. As of this morning, we still do not see the URL in Google but as of writing the last paragraph, it appears to be indexed now! So, let’s look at the results (we were very surprised): Every single test indexed… This obviously means that last week’s test failure was not due to the CSS not getting indexed, but possibly the Unicode or something else. What we do know is that every single way that we have hidden text in this test was indexable and is clearly being taken into account for the SERPs. Even to the point that Google pulls the hidden content as the metadata and in some cases pulled our GMB. These are some exciting finds but of course, is only going to lead to more testing. Join us next week where we explore how we can leverage this hidden content for rankings, as well as dig into why our last tests may not have indexed. Have a great weekend and until then, as always… Happy Testing! Get Your Free Campaign Recommendations Today! Not sure what would be the best route for your SEO campaign?
