Our hypothesis is that adding both relevant and irrelevant categories to a Google Business Profile (GBP) influences its visibility and ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs) in a nuanced manner.
We noted in a previous update the fact that Google definitely creates “guesses” or assumptions about your business when showing it for keywords. If that is the case, it would make sense that adding relevant or irrelevant categories may have some kind of impact.
Keep in mind, certain categories have special features while others have some pretty big restrictions. If adding additional categories does not impact rankings negatively, then we can safely use secondary categories to unlock these features or workaround posting restrictions (in some niches). So we set out to test the impact of supporting categories.
