Our hypothesis is that the inclusion of a detailed description in a Google My Business (GMB) listing functions not only as a mere field for keyword insertion but as a significant ranking factor within Google’s search algorithm. Specifically, we theorized that a GMB description containing relevant keywords could enhance the listing’s visibility for those terms. Conversely, the removal of the description or alteration of its content would lead to a noticeable decline in rankings for the mentioned keywords. This effect suggests that while the GMB description is a critical component for ranking, its influence is likely complemented by other signals, such as brand name recognition and category relevance. Our testing aimed to explore the direct impact of GMB descriptions on search visibility and how changes to this element affect overall keyword performance in search rankings. Through systematic manipulation of the GMB listing’s description—either by removal, keyword variation, or optimization of other listing features—we sought to isolate and understand the role of the description in enhancing or diminishing a business’s search presence, ultimately aiming to delineate the boundaries of its significance within the broader context of GMB listing optimization strategies
