Our hypothesis was that setting a Google My Business (GMB) vanity URL and subsequently building links to it, followed by changing the vanity URL, would result in the loss of all previously established links. Specifically, we theorized that changing the vanity URL would redirect the original links to a generic Google search page, thereby nullifying their direct traffic and SEO benefits to the original GMB listing. Additionally, we posited that once a GMB vanity URL is changed, the original URL becomes locked and unusable by others, essentially removing the possibility of reclaiming or redirecting the original linked traffic back to the GMB listing. This test aimed to explore the permanence of link equity for GMB listings upon vanity URL modification and the subsequent impact on SEO and direct traffic.
