We hypothesized that there would be value in exchanging links between listings, but we had to test this in a way where Google wouldn’t view the linking as spammy or pay-to-play.

In the old-school method of link swapping, you would link to someone else’s website in exchange for a link from their website. Google has looked down on this practice for a long time and has penalized it. But we wanted to test if link swapping had any value when it comes to local rankings…
