Our hypothesis is that adding relevant emojis to a Google My Business (GMB) listing name and features can influence search engine results page (SERP) performance, both in terms of visibility and click-through rates (CTRs). Specifically, we theorize that incorporating emojis directly related to the business niche or services offered (e.g., 🚗 for car-related services) will result in a noticeable boost in rankings for search queries that are semantically related to the meanings of those emojis. This effect is hypothesized to stem from Google’s ability to recognize and interpret emojis as equivalent to their word counterparts in search queries, thereby altering the relevance and ranking of listings in both organic search results and maps. However, the impact of emojis is expected to vary based on their relevance to the search terms and the context in which they are used (e.g., in the business name versus in reviews). Furthermore, while emojis may contribute to increased visibility and potentially higher CTRs due to enhanced SERP real estate and attention-grabbing elements, their use must be balanced with Google’s guidelines for business names and the potential risk of listing suspension. The hypothesis also is that the benefits seen from emoji usage in GMB listings might be temporary or fluctuate over time, reflecting Google’s evolving algorithms and their interpretation of emojis within business listings.
