
FEAR AND LOATHING IN THE ALGORITHM:
AN EXPLORATION INTO CTR MANIPUTLATION

Our hypothesis is that engaging in Click-Through Rate (CTR) manipulation through targeted interactions with Google Business Profile (GBP) posts and simulated user engagement can significantly affect the visibility and local search rankings of a listing. We theorize that by emulating genuine user behavior, such as searching for specific keywords, engaging with GBP posts, and visiting linked websites, we can artificially enhance a listing’s relevance and prominence in local search results.
To test CTR on some of our older test properties, we implemented CTR strategies on a couple listings we have on hand. We are interacting with a listing’s GBP posts using software on mobile devices.
We may potentially test other CTR manipulations, but posts are where we started.
