The presence of a detailed description in a Google My Business (GMB) listing plays a significant role in the ranking of specific keywords, particularly those mentioned exclusively within the description itself. This hypothesis is that a well-crafted description could potentially provide a “rank boost” for targeted keywords, contributing to the listing’s overall visibility in search results. Conversely, the removal of the description is expected to result in a noticeable decline in rankings for keywords previously supported by the description, suggesting its importance as a ranking factor. This effect could be more pronounced for keywords that do not have other strong signals supporting their relevance to the listing. However, for a GMB listing to sustain long-term rankings for specific terms, it may require additional signals beyond the description, indicating that while descriptions can influence short-term visibility for certain keywords, other factors contribute to sustained ranking performance. The test aims to clarify the extent to which a GMB description contributes to keyword rankings and whether its impact is direct (as a rank boost) or indirect (by merely allowing a listing to be considered for certain terms without guaranteeing rankings without support from other signals).
Does the GMB description give you any “rank boost” or does it only give you the opportunity to rank for a specific keyword, as we found with the service area?
Or possibly it doesn’t help with anything at all…
We took a GMB listing that was already ranking well, had a description, and just removed the entire description. The theory is that if the description provided a ranking boost, then we would see some keyword drops or fluctuations. If nothing happens then either the GMB description is not a ranking factor, or it gives you the opportunity to show for a term. But, without other signals in place, you won’t really show…
